DOCTRINE

From the book, Taking God Seriously, by J.I.Packer:

Doctrine is the map that guides us on our cross-country journey through the thousand-odd pages of the Bible, on the one hand, and the complexities of godly living, on the other. Doctrine is the spectacles through which we discern the stepping-stones across the rapids and through the swamps that keep our feet on the path of life. Doctrine, indeed, is the surgical cure for the natural spiritual blindness that otherwise makes it impossible for us to find where the path of life begins. Doctrine is the data about the Lord Jesus Christ that makes faith in him possible. And then doctrine becomes, so to speak, the cookbook for life, giving the correct recipe for each venture in belief and behavior.

FOLLOW ME

Finished this title the other day. Worth the read especially if you're willing to be challenged about your walk with Jesus.

THE INSANITY OF GOD

A book worth reading. The topic centers on the author's time as a missionary in Somaliland as well as his research on persecuted Christians in Russia, Ukraine, China, and some unnamed Muslim countries.

ORPHAN JUSTICE

I just finished this. Great book. He covers many bases and doesn't hold punches when it comes to the lack of Christian participation on this topic. Carr talks about foster care, adoption, helping kids with disabilities, the pros and cons, the churches role, orphanages, the plight of the homeless and poor-primarily among kids, and abortion. For those who advocate for the orphan, this book would be a primary resource.

WALL CLIMBERS

They say you should "never say never." But this is one case in which I'll say never. I love Yosemite, I love things of photography, but I'll never be the guy taking pictures of someone hanging onto the face of a cliff like you see here. Kudos to him.

CUYAHOGA NATIONAL PARK

Untitled, originally uploaded by Bookrep.
Dawn, Sean and I spent part of the day yesterday touring this national park-something right in our own backyard, and it's taken us 11 years to get there. Took a train ride that lasted several hours by the time it went north to one location, back south past our entry station, then back north to drop us off.

Seeing Through the Fog

This is a wonderful book. Dobson is open about his struggles with ALS, and all that entails. As he admits, he gives no easy answers or formulas, which I think most people facing a terminal illness don't want anyway. His personal stories and devotional thoughts are relevant.

QUOTES I'D LIKE TO REMEMBER

A few quotes I've seen on Facebook or heard on the radio that actually mean something to me:

Sometimes God doesn't change your situation because He's trying to change your heart.

&

Never sacrifice the permanent for the immediate.
